    DIY Hydroponic Tower Gardens FAQ

Grow anything from herbs, lettuce, strawberries & greens to full blown fruiting crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini even tubers such as potatoes, carrots and beet root!

    Here’s some inspiration 🙂 :
    Beet Root |  Lettuce | Spinach | Kale | Capsicum | Tomato

Cucumber Celery | Beans | Herbs | Strawberries | Carrot

Swiss Chard | Pumpkin | Bok Choi Chillies Snow Peas

    Zucchini | Broccoli | Shallots

You get the picture right!   🙂   You can pretty much grow anything.   Just ensure you’re providing enough sun…

We recommend spacing your towers approx 1 meter apart.   The kits come standard with 7 planters per tower in 2 sizes.   Medium (33cm width) & large (45cm width) with the top planter sittig at approx 1.5-1.7 meters high

This is the simplest form of hydroponic gardening available and very effective.   Modular stacking planters are filled with coco coir which is like soil, only way better (see why).   Irrigation from above drips water onto the top pot with water flowing through to each below layer and the coco wicking the water to all parts of the tower.

Water can be delivered via reservoir (with an electric pump) or water mains (with a fertilizer injector).    A timer is configured at 3 x 1 min feeds per day, and adjustable drippers are used to increase/restrict the flow of water.   An all purpose hydroponic nutrient is used which ensures maximal results.

The towers are raised so that any drips from above can be used to grow plants at the base, or alternatively, captured with a drip tray fastened to the riser pipe returning the water back to the reservoir (if desired).

This depends on many factors such as climate, temperature, type of plants, sunlight exposure etc.  However a typical watering regime will be 3 to 4 times per day for 1 minute.  Then adjust the drippers to restrict water flow as needed.

For the hydrcoponic enthusiasts out there, a drain to waste set-up is quite a foreign concept.   Most hydroponic systems are closed, meaning the water is constantly recirculating.   For example the Smart Farm Tower Garden.

Drain to waste system is perfect for large gardens where recirculation challenges exist.   They also work amazingly well!   The key is providing a small flush of water at regular intervals.   Just enough to saturate each pot, without significant run-off.  We provide detailed nstructions on how to do this and there are thousands of examples from successful growers worldwide.

Vegetable plants need direct sunlight to grow properly.   Think about a farmers field.   Full sun all day long.   So long as you have the right moisture content in the tower, full sun is recommended for best results.   In the very hot summer months growing soft crops such as lettuce, you may wish to rig up a shade cloth overhead using the top of the tower.   This is also beneficial to stop birds.   But, yep get the towers in full sun!

You will need a timer, submersible pump, tubing, and a water reservoir. Structural materials will include PVC pipe and steel poling.

Yes!   That’s the cool thing about this method.   It’s modular & scalable wtih very little infrastructure needs.   You can start with a simple 5 tier planter set and when ready, upgrade to a 3 tower DIY set-up.   From there you can simply add more towers and won’t need to re-purchase additional pumps or injectors.  They’ll work for countless towers…  See this farm, the entire farm runs off 2 x fertilizer injectors powered by AA batteries!

Drive some 19mm diameter galvanized metal conduit into the ground then slide 20mm diameter PVC pressure pipe over this, then place some 32mm diameter pressure pipe cut to 500mm high to raise the tower.   Connect the irrigation and set-up the timer and your done!.  If you want a full kit with everything included as well as detailed instructions, check out the DIY tower kits.

The DIY Towers come with 3 options.   Electric, Solar or Water tap powered.

    • Electric utilizes a reservoir & electric pump with a timer
    • Solar utilizes a reservoir and 35w solar panel and solar pump connected a custom battery and timer
    • Water tap powered utilizes a fertilizer injector connected to the water mains and a battery operated tap timer

Yes, to do this we simply add a drip tray which is fastened to the riser pipe of each tower which comes with grommets and tubing so you can return it back to the reservoir.  See this quick video for how to do this.   How to set-up a recirculating tower garden.

Raised towers are easier to manage (no bending over) but also by taking them off the ground you’re eliminating a raft of soil born pest issues.   Additionally, the increased airflow and sun exposure is great for the plants.   Many construct the towers over an existing garden bed allowing the drips to feed the below bed.   As the towers are raised, sunlight can get to the below sections for maximum yields.   See this example

Yes, each kit comes with adjustable drippers that allow you to increase or decrease the water output at each tower.   This is beneficial when you have towers at different stages of growth or with different watering needs.

Depending on your selection (reservoir or fertilizer injector), your kit will come with either a 4kg bulk pack or a 550g sample pack of nutrient.   Watch these short videos on how to mix and use them.

These are brilliant and very productive. I have mine attached to an overhead beam for extra support because I grow snow peas and they can cause too much weight on one side but it’s not essential. Bush beans grow super well as do herbs and even beetroot. Salad greens grow fast. They are fantastic if you have bandicoots like we do; (they’re cute but not good in a veggie patch).
They are also handy for germinating flower seeds.

My towers are doing VERY WELL! They have taken some time with the col weather here but now established themselves well.
On the two fuller towers I notice that there is no drip reaching below the top level. The water runs for 3 minutes 3 times a day which used to saturate a drip throughout the whole tower.

What do you advise to get water running through the whole tower again? Increase the water running time?

      Thanks
      Kind regards

So, so happy. I'm writing this from a hospital bed. Thanks to Mr. Stacky my herb & vegie garden is at home looking after itself. Germination happened within a week on about 75% of the seeds, now it's been 6 weeks we're starting to thin harvest. It might seem a bit of an outlay in the beginning, but the garden will soon be paying for itself. Buy it forsure, I'm going to as soon as we build our new house.

I've not run into any problems or complications. I'm excited to see what my summer crop is like! Very intrigued to see how the tomatoes grow.

The Stacky system has been a great way to optimise space while producing a quality product...
I have been trialing different herbs and leafy greens on a three tower system to see what grows best, with the aim to expand commercially with the best performers.
The simple automated system allows you to spend less time worrying about the operation and more time tweaking the inputs and observing the quick results.
The system is a lot of fun and beats the hell out of growing in the ground! Looking forward to expanding, following some successful results this season.

We initially purchased 2x 5 Tier Towers and were impressed with the results so we purchased an additional 2x 5 Tier Vertical Towers earlier this year. We found the top tier of each Tower could be used for larger plants such as Squash, Kohlrabi, Kale, etc, so we took the top layer off 3 of the Towers and made a 5th smaller Tower. This also aided in reducing shading of our other pots around the Towers.

We had some issues through Summer, Autumn and early Winter with the excessive rain we copped here in Sydney which didn't allow us to keep the nutrients up in the Towers, so we got some quality organic fertiliser and mixed it into the Coir in the Towers and just applied the nutrient mix between rain periods.

As you can see from the photo, we have had some great results growing Kojlrabi, Kale, Radichhio, and Pak Choi in the DIY Tower! We also have Endive, Corn Salad, Rocket, and various types of Lettuce flourishing in the rest of the Towers!

These Towers are GREAT! They are real space savers and has enabled us to expand our garden with the limited space we have. Thanks to Mr Stacky, we are now able to grow more fresh produce, in the limited space we have, and enjoy eating food knowing how its grown!

I have wanted the addition of a vegetable garden to our yard since our early landscaping began about 7 years ago. In a residential backyard we already have numerous fruit trees and with young children we did not find we had the space for large plots to grow our own vegetables. I recently came across Mr Stacky and was convinced it was our perfect solution. We purchased a customised DIY tower kit. Install went really well and Mr Stacky has been more than helpful in responding to the few questions we did have. I have popped the first seedlings into the towers and will be adding seeds over the coming weeks. I look forward to harvesting our first crops over the coming months.

Been so happy with our 3 tower system, that we are about to purchase a 9 tower system! It's early in spring in Melb at the moment, so plants are still small, but they are growing so fast with the recent sunshine. We have strawberries on top and then carrots, kale, lettuce, coriander and parsley all grown from seed. We found the system pretty easy to set up with the instructions provided and it has been very little maintenance. Perfect to get growing on our steep block where trying to create veggie beds has been nearly impossible.

Massive Zuchini's, Kale, Lettuce, Spring Onion, Strawberries, Beans and more... I've never had the same results with traditional gardening and other hydronponic methods. Thanks Mr Stacky for making gardening life more easier and pleasurable. Take a look at the pic of my Zuchina's which have taking just two months through winter to grow. The veggies are delicious!

Thank you, I will when it starts growing well, at the moment it is still only seedlings (I only set it up a week ago, the universe was against me)! I’m still working on the watering timer. I also had to change the top rail to make it more sturdy (birds perch on it and causing it to lean). Not a problem I’d have if it was in the ground but it is in pots on wheels in case it has to be moved (it’s a dog jumping prevention wall at the moment). The water has floating plants on it too, I have a long trough and don’t want it to get algae. I think I should have removed the palm in the middle pot before using it!

      Have fun,
      Amanda
P.S. Everyone who visits has been impressed by it, just wait unitl it really gets going!!

We absolutely love our hydroponic towers. Really easy set up and instructions. The hardest part was drilling through the pavers! 6 weeks since we planted a mixture of seeds and seedlings and we have more than enough for a veg/salad loving couple of Sydneysiders. The produce tastes so much better picked fresh, without plastic and contaminants. Can't wait to get some winter veg in. Brian was very patient and responsive to my email queries...highly recommend, great product AND service!

Absolutely love it! 5 stars! I was worried the set-up was going to be difficult, but the instructions were clear and the videos helpful. The package came with a good amount of coco peat which we'll use to top up after first harvest. Bought regular seedlings from nursery and just brushed as much dirt off as possible before planting. We're keeping a close eye on the drips and going through the nutrient pretty quick. We'll have to keep a close eye on it when it starts getting hotter in regional vic. Have recommended this to a few friends now. Nice product... thank-you, Teresa

Bought as a gift for my daughter. Went for 2 towers with 9 stacks each. The package came quickly in the post. We bought the poles from Bunnings for $26. We have one tower with lettuce and rocket and the other with herbs and shallots. After 10 days every single plant is thriving bar 2 basil plants that were not happy to begin with! I've recommended this to several of my friends now.

Pretty simple and straight forward DIY system. Really good vertical hydroponic system. I wasn't sure what to expect when I ordered it. The directions were clear. I went to Lowes and got the metal poles and reservoir. All I had to do after that was hammer them in, and do some light assembly work. It really isn't too arduous for a DIY system. The pump and timers seem to be working well. I will see what grows in the coming months.

New Experience, Awesome Product - I got this tower garden kit for a garden project I could do with my kids. I didn't expect it to be easy but I was delighted to find out that everything I needed really was in the box and the setup process was simple. After a trip to Lowes for the pipes and water container I was good to go. It's a well designed kit with well made components and parts and so far it's really been awesome. At this stage I'm looking to get a few more. I'd recommend this product to pretty much anyone
