About: I started with a 5-tier Medium Tower in July of this year to start a balcony garden for the kids and I to enjoy fresh produce year-round. I added a 5-tier Large Tower in August as my obsession and gardening plans grew!

Having never started a garden before, let alone a balcony hydroponic tower garden, I spend at least an hour a day reading to improve my knowledge. I’ve also learned a lot through trial and error over the last few months.

We have a south-facing apartment balcony that starts getting sunlight around midday, so I move the towers around to optimise the amount of sun the towers get over the afternoon.

Our first Sweet 100 Tomatoes and Spacemaster Cucumbers grown from seed should be ready for harvest over the next few weeks. As well as herbs and strawberries we are also growing lettuce, rocket, kale, spinach, mustard greens, snowpeas for salad leaves; as well radishes, beetroot, carrots, spring onions…. and more!

As I’m a geek, I’m currently converting a Google Sheets spreadsheet into an Airtable database, to help predict and record germination, maturity and harvest dates, as well as help with succession planting across the two towers.

My tips for new growers:

1. If you have younger kids, while they enjoy planting seeds, they can get impatient waiting for the plants to get established. Plant a mix of well-established seedlings and seeds in the tower(s) to begin so the kids can get instant gratification and then still have the excitement of checking for new seedlings every day.

2. Invest in a heat mat, seedling tray and grow light to help propagate seedlings indoors, especially in winter months. This can also help with your succession planting.

3. Expect to become obsessed with your Mr Stacky garden!

About: So a tip when setting up the tower if you have any vegetables that grow as a vine, the best way to encourage them is to plant them at the top and provide a structure behind or in between the towers. Worked really well for our cherry tomatoes plants and nasturtiums. Happy planting!

About: Being a first time vertical gardener I wanted a good quality compact system. Mr Stacky was the answer.

It was easy to set up and looks great. All the info was so helpful and the videos are fantastic.

These pics are just a few days after planting my very first seedlings , look how happy and healthy they are. My tip to first time purchasers is read and watch all of the info before making a start, it makes things so easy. All my three towers are planted and now I ( and my neighbours who are very interested ) can’t wait to reap the rewards. Now alI I need is more towers.   Thanks Mr Stacky

About: I recommend Mr Stacky Smart Farms to those wanting to lead more sustainable lives. For new growers who find the idea of keeping plants alive daunting, let alone their ability to grow their dinner, Mr Stacky Smart Farm soil-less hydroponic gardening makes the process simple and enjoyable.

Coconut coir is a fantastic growing medium that naturally keeps many pests away and gives roots access to oxygen which improves germination and encourages healthy produce. Hydrate the coir in plain water and watch it expand nine times its size. Sprinkle seeds of your choice directly into clovers filled with hydrated coir at the recommended depth on the packet. Alternatively, grow them first in seed punnets (like coir pellets) and transplant into the clovers once they become seedlings. Top the reservoir up with water when low and add nutrients every 2-3 weeks and, that’s it. Really. You’ll get to enjoy watching your plants grow almost right in front of your eyes.

Things to bear in mind:
Set up of the irrigation system can feel complicated if you’re not a handy person. It won’t apply to everyone, but I had to get help.
The height of the supplied PVC pipes means that if you’re taller than 1.5m you’ll be bobbing your head up and down as you walk over the joining pipes and under the overhead irrigation tube in between a 3 x Smart Farm for harvesting (or admiring your produce). Purchasing longer PVC pipes will extend the height and make it easier to get around. These are available at your local Bunnings or other hardware stores.

About: I bought my first Mr Stacky a year ago and have loved every minute, tomato, lettuce, strawberry, radish, spinach, basil, snow pea, carrot, beetroot! Japanese turnip and spring onion!!! I have just bought my second solar powered Stacky, and have given 2 stacked as presents to friends.  You could say I’m a convert. I have a garden I still grow flowers and veggies in but the balcony which has always been too hot for pots, is perfect for stackies😉 The veggies grow so quickly. My main tip is to keep a good check on the water level and wash out the top spider every few weeks to keep cleat of debris. I also use a bottle brush to clean the water gauge every now and again. The only issue I am currently having is a battle to keep the cockatoo’s that have discovered it away🥴 I have had to resort to netting. Must check your site to see if you have any advice on this!!!

About: We live in a rental unit with no garden. I Like Strawberries! Not the tasteless carrot textured excuses we are sold by supermarkets. Real, sweet, flavoursome glorious summer berries. So when I saw your Mr Stacky I saw a future with my own home grown Strawberries. If only I could get hold of the best varieties! Update: When I saw Mr Stacky I had to have one. mostly to grow strawberries. I soon found I had to have Mr Stacky (Vera) mobile to keep it in the sun. Then I found I had to create a barrier to dissuade the slugs and snails. The whole lot is now mobile, stable and slimey creature safe, Thank You Mr Stacky.

About: I purchased a 5 tier unit last year to use for my kitchen herb garden on the balcony and this image shows just the self-seeded herbs coming back this year as I have not planted it again yet. My future goal is that I would love to convert this unit to aquaculture as I have just set up a beautiful old ball and claw bath as a waterlily fishpond and would like to experiment with setting up this tier for hydroponics and syphoning the fish water through on a regular basis with a solar pump. If this works well then I’d like to expand to more tiers on the balcony for strawberries etc.

I love growing food for my family and although I have very little time for home gardening it keeps me sane in these crazy times and it brings me so much joy to be able to pop out on the balcony to pick some herbs, spring onions or a lemon for the salad dressing. My balcony gets a lot of sun and is right outside the kitchen so an ideal place for this experiment. If I was lucky enough to win I’d be over-the-moon excited to get this aquaponic experiment rolling!

About: During the coronavirus lockdown we became really interested in growing our own food and decided to invest in a tower garden – only ever had a small herb garden previously. Setup was pretty straight forward and the kids were able to get involved too.

I don’t believe we’ve ever tried truly fresh lettuce until last week – it’s honestly the best tasting salad we’ve ever had. The adults in the house are vegan/vegetarian so for us this has been a game changer and I think we need to expand our setup! Currently we have growing lettuce varieties, beetroot, and pak choy, in one and a half of the towers and the other one and a half towers have just been planted with more lettuce seeds for continual supply. Up the top of two of the towers we are trialling some small cherry tomatoes, sweet valentine and tommy toe grown from seed. Everything is thriving – we’ve even underplanted to capture some of the ‘run off’ and those plants are loving it too.
Wish we had of done this sooner!

About: Hi. We started converting our back lawn into a productive veggie patch about 3 years ago and our veggie garden is still evolving and expanding. I love the growing flexibility the Mr Stacky system gives me. I usually change my Mr Stacky seasonally depending on what requires less sunlight as I can wheel my Stacky in and out of the shade as required. My veggie patch is Full sun all day so I needed something to grow shade loving crops during warmer months like Lettuce etc. I have grown strawberries successfully in my ‘soil filled’ Mr Stacky with close attention to watering and fertilizing. I would love the Smart Farm system to grow strawberries year round without worrying about them drying out and needing full sun to produce fruit. I have 2 systems for perfect succession planting and flexibility. I recently let my sister borrow one Stacky to try growing veggies on her unit balcony and so far she is loving it. I would recommend any one using the system with soil to mulch around the plants to help retain moisture, I use sugar cane mulch. Coir blocks are also great when rehydrated and mixed with potting mix before planting will also help retain moisture. The last pic I attached is my garden on a beautiful afternoon. Love my Stacky’s!!! Bec 😀

About: I am new to the whole grow your own at home idea. I chose Mr Stacky for the convenience of having a garden that took up little room, self watered/fertilised and as I went with Solar powered, also requires no electricity.

It was extremely easy to setup and plant. I have interplanted with good bug plants to hopefully encourage good bugs to the planter to keep away those pesky pests. Mine is currently overgrown as I missed the thinning out period as we were not home for the initial growing phase. Another bonus it looked after itself while we were away.

I love my Mr Stacky, it is a great way to be introduced to the art of growing your own greens.

About: Moving to the Dandenong Ranges presented some new challenges to our home gardening! With no flat ground and all manner of creatures trying to eat everything, we moved to balcony gardening, our mr stacky has been instrumental in allowing us to continue gardening in our new environment: as you can see from photo 2; we are still in need of more space haha! A second mr stacky would be perfect! Side note: we use our own worm tea in place of nutrients, it’s working amazingly!
